The Crisis on the Ground

2026 Langtang Lirung Glacier Collapse & Flash Floods

On the morning of 26 August 2026, a massive glacier collapse and ice avalanche occurred on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, generating an Ms 5.2 seismic tremor detected worldwide. The catastrophic collapse released unprecedented debris flows and flash floods surging down the Trishuli River (Bhotekoshi) basin. The flood destroyed the Gyirong Port border crossing and devastated settlements along a 72 km (45 mi) stretch across Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. With over 780 confirmed dead, thousands missing, and critical highways obliterated, affected communities are in urgent need of emergency shelter, clean drinking water, trauma healthcare, and rehabilitation aid.
